Migrating From Tumblr to Ghost

Post cover image

Warning: This will currently not work for Ghost 3.0. It does not seem at this point there is any tool for this that works. The only way I have seen to do this is to install Ghost 1.0, use the steps below, then upgrade from Ghost 1.0 to 2.0 and then to 3.0. From there you export the content and import it wherever you are hosting. If you are hosting with Ghost(Pro), contact their support for help and they can do it for you.

If you have a Tumblr blog and are looking to migrate to Ghost you can follow these steps. The Ghost team has plans to make an official migration tool for many platforms but has not quite gotten to them yet. In the mean time José Padilla has created a tool to help with the migration.

  1. Go to the Tumblr to Ghost tool.

  2. In the text box fill in your Tumblr URL and click Export.

  3. Once the tool is done processing your, it will begin downloading a your-tumblr-domain-ghost.json file.

  4. Now that you have an export of your Tumblr data you need to upload it to your Ghost blog. To do this open up your-Ghost-domain.com/ghost/settings/labs/ in your browser, click Choose File, and click Import.

    Migrate from Tumblr to Ghost

Ghost will then import all of your Tumblr content into its database!
